Qari Yusuf Noorbhai taught me how to recite the Holy Quran with Tajweed

Great great grandpa, Mamuji Bhayat's Quran

My mother Fatima, daughter of Khadija Behra, who was the daughter of Rasool Bhayat, who was the daughter of Mamuji Bhayat (possibly of Khazak origin) who was the son of Aysha Ariff, who was the daughter Mohammed Ariff. Her speciality: Sewing Wedding Gowns.

My father: Mohamed Ismail Ariff was the son of Yusuf ‘Isop’, who was the son of Ismail, son of Ahmed, son of Mohamed(1816) whose ancestor was Ismail Arif from Yemen.

Born in Kholvad, Surat in 1931. Manufacturer of tshwetshwe jikisa ladies dresses. He taught me how to ride horses. He was a Dairy farmer too. Founder member of the Lenasia Muslim Association and laid the foundation for the first Masjid in Soweto.

As a child I loved to draw a 5 pointed star with the Kalima finger in the mud, under the rainbow after an electric thunder shower.
